BASF Launches Recycled Nylon 3D Printing Filament Made from 100% Ocean Plastics

BASF introduces Ultrafuse rPA, a 100% recycled nylon filament derived from ocean-recovered plastics. The new material offers identical mechanical properties to virgin PA6, targeting sustainable manufacturing brands.

BASF Forward AM launched Ultrafuse rPA, a 100% recycled nylon 3D printing filament produced from ocean-recovered plastics. The material delivers identical mechanical properties to virgin PA6 (Nylon 6), making it suitable for functional end-use parts in demanding applications.

Material Properties

Ultrafuse rPA exhibits tensile strength of 45 MPa, thermal resistance up to 100 degC, and excellent chemical resistance. The filament is available in 1.75mm and 2.85mm diameters for FFF/FDM printers and processes on standard nylon printing profiles with heated chambers recommended.

Ocean Plastic Sourcing

The raw material is sourced from ocean fishing nets and marine debris collected from coastal communities in Southeast Asia, processed through a certified supply chain. Each kilogram of Ultrafuse rPA reportedly removes approximately 0.8kg of plastic from marine environments.

Target Applications

Initial customers include outdoor equipment manufacturers and sustainable fashion brands seeking traceable recycled content in their products. The filament is particularly suited for functional parts requiring durability in harsh environments, including marine, automotive, and industrial applications.

Certification and Availability

Ultrafuse rPA is REACH and RoHS compliant, with tensile strength and flexural modulus test certificates available upon request. The filament is now available through BASF authorized distributors worldwide at a price premium of approximately 15% over conventional PA6 filaments.
