However, ABS requires a heated bed typically above 100 degrees Celsius and an enclosed build chamber to prevent warping and cracking during printing.
PETG combines the ease of printing found in PLA with improved mechanical properties closer to ABS. The glycol modifier reduces brittleness and improves layer adhesion compared to standard PET. PETG offers good impact resistance, moderate temperature resistance, and excellent layer adhesion that reduces the likelihood of delamination. It is also more resistant to UV degradation than ABS, making it suitable for outdoor applications. PETG prints at moderate temperatures around 230 to 250 degrees Celsius with a heated bed at 70 to 80 degrees.
Post-processing capabilities differ significantly between the two materials. ABS responds well to acetone vapor smoothing, which dissolves the surface layer to create a glossy, uniform finish. PETG cannot be acetone smoothed, but it can be sanded and painted with standard acrylics. Both materials can be joined using epoxy or cyanoacrylate adhesives, though ABS also responds well to plastic welding using acetone as a solvent.
For functional parts requiring higher temperature resistance and impact strength, ABS remains the preferred choice despite its printing challenges. PETG is excellent for mechanical parts that need good layer adhesion and moderate durability without the warping issues associated with ABS. Many users keep both materials on hand to take advantage of each material's strengths for specific applications.
