What is Metal 3D Printing?

Metal 3D printing, also known as DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) or SLM (Selective Laser Melting), uses high-powered lasers to melt metal powder layer by layer, building fully dense metal parts from CAD data.

This technology enables the production of complex geometries that would be impossible or prohibitively expensive with traditional manufacturing methods like casting or machining. Metal AM is widely adopted in aerospace, medical, automotive, and industrial sectors.

Technologies: DMLS vs SLM

DMLS

Directly sinters metal powder without fully melting it. Excellent for most metal alloys including stainless steel, aluminum, and cobalt chrome.

SLM

Fully melts metal powder into a homogeneous part. Ideal for titanium and other reactive metals requiring precise control.

Materials Available

Stainless Steel 316L

Excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties. Ideal for marine, chemical, and medical applications.

Stainless Steel 304

Good corrosion resistance and formability. Widely used for general industrial applications.

Aluminum AlSi10Mg

Lightweight with good strength. Ideal for aerospace, automotive, and robotics applications.

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V)

Excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Widely used in aerospace, medical implants, and racing applications.

Cobalt Chrome (CoCr)

Exceptional wear resistance and biocompatibility. Ideal for medical implants and turbine components.

Tool Steel

High hardness and wear resistance for tooling, dies, and injection molding applications.
