What is SLS / MJF 3D Printing?

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) uses a high-powered laser to sinter nylon powder layer by layer, fusing particles together without requiring support structures. MJF (Multi Jet Fusion), developed by HP, uses an inkjet array to apply fusing agents followed by heat to produce parts with superior mechanical properties and consistency.

Both technologies produce durable functional parts from engineering-grade nylon materials, making them ideal for low-volume manufacturing, functional prototyping, and end-use production.

SLS vs MJF: Which to Choose?

Feature SLS HP MJF
Material PA12, PA11, TPU PA12 (primarily)
Strength High Higher (better density)
Surface Finish Matte, slightly rough Smoother, more consistent
Isotropic Properties Good Excellent
Cost Lower Higher
Best For Complex geometries, functional prototypes End-use parts, batch production

Materials Available

PA12 Nylon

Standard SLS/MJF material. Excellent mechanical properties, good chemical resistance, and biocompatibility.

PA11 Nylon

Bio-derived from castor oil. More flexible than PA12 with better impact resistance. Ideal for functional parts.

Glass-Filled Nylon

Enhanced stiffness and dimensional stability. Suitable for structural applications requiring rigidity.

TPU Elastomer

Flexible, rubber-like material for parts requiring durability and impact absorption.

Key Advantages

No Support Structures

Powder bed supports itself. Undercuts, complex cavities, and intricate geometries are no problem.

Excellent Mechanical Properties

Strong, durable parts suitable for functional testing and end-use applications.

Good Chemical Resistance

Nylon offers resistance to oils, greases, and common solvents.

Biocompatible

PA12 is USP Class I-IV certified and suitable for certain medical applications.

Applications

SLS/MJF nylon printing is ideal for:

  • Functional Prototyping - End-use testing with durable materials
